League Strategy - 2007/01/19 19:10
What's the best strategy to use for this season's BCL?
With grace period, we all used to show up with designs ready and the trick was learning to do it in under 5 minutes. Again, at first there were short matches until people got the hang of it.
Now, that strategy doesnt seem to work too well unless you really know your design by heart. Flipping back and forth between the design isnt fast enough for this season. A fast start is VERY important for survival.
If you dont know the design by heart, its best to build without one, and just make it up as you go. It doesnt matter if its bad, as long as you get the items producing quick and make sure you dont run out of cash.
I'd suggest NOT demolishing laser research anymore, because bomb attacks happen within the first 2 minutes now and commando's begin dying from the start of the game. You dont want to get caught without lasers, its already cost a few teams including mine a game.
Placing defense right away is a must as well.
Really, its like playing the old BCDX these league games, because back then you got attacked the moment you joined, even at 1 building.

I wouldn't build too fast as mayor at BCL and i would watch money evry second, it's the biggest prob in BCL's (OM is also a big prob in BCL)

I for one would like to see that. Does it include showing shorthanded, failing turret rushing and interfeering with other games?

*desperate to avoid degeneration into a Clientel post-fest*
Being a ref is an excellent window into BCL strategy. From my perspective the teams that have won have had the following things in common:
1) Not adhering to a design.
This is extremely important. Building a design from the ground up in regular play is *completely* different from building under durress. If an enemy is blocking a tile where your laser factory is supposed to be, what are you going to do? My advice would be to not have a design at all. Instead, scout out the terrain and find ways to narrow down access to your cc with rocks, buildings, lava, and turrets. Sounds simple, but I'd say 80% of the teams aren't doing this. They are leaving a single turret to guard their cc and in some cases are leaving turrets sitting on their facts or in their inventories! This is foolish.
2) Their enemies haven't attacked them.
One of the fundamental differences between battlecity and most other video games is that it is really, really hard to kill another tank without a)them doing something stupid b)mines or c) dfgs. If you have all four of your teammates sit back at your base and shoot enemies with lasers you are probably going to lose. I recommend having three attackers in the early game and then possibly scale back to two in the late early game.
3) They blow the enemies' guns.
Taking out lasers in the early game basically ensures a victory. The enemy will be unable to shoot a bomb, making virtually any suicide attack an overwhelming success. In normal BC, lasers basically suck ass. If someone bombs your lasers you just wait a bit and rebuild them. If they lame you into the ground, you bitch at them and restart. In the BCL, if you lose your lasers you lose the match.
4) They actually show up.
Despite all the complaining about a lack of a grace period, the majority of degenerate matches have occurred as a result of failure to show enough players. Thus far, team 2 is the best example of this. Odds are that you won't win if you ... um ... don't show up.
5) The best all-around player mayors.
Yep, the best all-around player mayors. Team 3 is a great example. Although Merloch and Mak are great players, BoC is unquestiongly a more well-rounded player. If you want your best all-around player to orb, switch him out of mayor later in the game.
6) They come prepared.
If you don't even know what city you are going to pick before you show up to the match, you will probably lose. Preparation actually works and the teams that come with a strategy generally win.
There are other less important factors, but these are salient.
Good luck in future matches!
