Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/27 00:04 Hmm, surprises me theres no info on defense here yet.. Well then, il do it !

Basics

As a defender, your job is to protect the city from any and all threats. This would be: bombs, attackers, DFG's, and the dreaded orb. While doing this, you will have to go into the dogfight and start to fight the attackers. But there is a bit more to this than there is to the naked eye.

Alertness

Keep a sharp look on the radar to know when, and where the enemy is going to strike. As soon as you see that tiny red dot, go straight to it and start pushing them away from the city. If they appear to be going around, follow them until they are out of the city map, as they are likely trying to go to the back side of the city.

Bombs

around 99% of attackers carry bombs, new/beginners take around 2-4 bombs. Skilled attackers will take around 4-8. Try to keep count of how many bombs they bring so you know when to stop looking for bombs and start focusing more on killing the attacker. Once an attacker drops a bomb, focus around 80% of your attention on it! if that thing blows up, you are going to cost your mayor some time to get away from their attacker (if any), make them come down and repair the damage, and then do what they were doing before. Shooting those things is very important. There a few a few signs that show that the attacker is out of bombs:
1. they will tend to start attacking more effortlessly
2. they will start running around
3. they will say it (dont be too gullible, it could be a trick)
4. they'll turn around and get more

Dueling

Perhaps the most important part of defending, is to duel. Dueling takes alot of practice and knowledge in part. You have to know how the player likes to fight, whether it's by running around and hitting you when they have the chance, or using the surroundings to provide cover and take you out from the shadows. Use all you have at your area to help you out. Sometimes it helps to carry mines around and drop them over the area you both are fighting, but mines only go so far. Instead, try to hit the enemy with your bazooka, as it deals the most damage, but make your shots quick, and start moving again. DO NOT SIT STILL AND BE A SITTING DUCK! Remember, practice makes perfect.

Other Stuff

You CAN use DFG's on defense to annoy attackers, but it's not really recommended. Attackers need DFG's more than the defense does.

You CAN use medkits on defense, but I would not recommend it, and im sure others would not either. This is because Attackers really need medkits in order to deal more damage. Also, most cities will have a hospital to aid the defenders.

If you see an enemy on YOUR hospital, bring in a couple of mines and drive them out! dont let them take advantage of whats there for YOU.

Pay attention to the chat log, there comes a time when you will hear, "d north!" or something like that. Also there could be someone from the offense saying, "Bombs!" or that they destroyed something important to the other team. After the attacker dies, grab 1 or 2 bombs and rush to the other city. Don't waste precious time.

Keep an internal clock if you are having to deal with 2 attackers. Don't focus on one as the other will cause some-severe damage. Focus on one attacker for 3-4 seconds, and rush to the other attacker. dont stay there for more than 5 seconds because bombs detonate 5 seconds after they are placed. Try to rush back to the other attacker while their bomb is placed, shoot it, shoot the attacker once or twice, then run back to the original attacker as they might have placed a bomb.

Constantly shoot for DFG's. If you are caught on a dfg, say it so your teamates know you hit it, and to avoid it. After you get freed (if you werent killed), shoot it! Don't let another teamate fall on it. If you know where one is, and it's where a turret used to go, place the turret on top of it. That way, the other team will have to rebuild their DFG's, and if they don't, they only have 2 to work with .
If you are dueling someone, also keep shooting as they will drop dfgs in random places. The more attention you pay as to where they like to place their dfgs, you will know where to find them. Certain giveaways as to where they placed them are:

1. They run over you constantly
2. They get behind you and run away
3. They go into a single tile entrance

If you see them do numbers 1 or 2, shoot in all directions before moving. If you move first, you will get caught in it. If you see number 3, your best shot is to hurt the attacker badly, or kill the attacker. Do not rush over, even if they placed a bomb, they are trying to get you on the dfg so you also blow up when the bomb explodes.

If you see a teammate stuck on a dfg, shoot the attacker, but be careful not to shoot your partner or hit the dfg. If there is a bomb next to your teammate, shoot the bomb carefully. Try to hit it with a laser shot so that way you don't hurt them as much.

Memorize your surroundings. This way, when a defensive item goes down, replace it a.s.a.p. If it is not replaced, it's and easy target for attackers.

If it is necessary to 4D. Make sure someone is attacking effectively at random times. Sometimes, catching the other team off guard may be the key between orbing, and getting orbed. But make sure the attack isnt when 4 or more of the opposing city's players are attacking. If there are more than 4 attackers (you get doubled), you will most likely be in a 4D situation. It will be very hard to break out of it, so just hang on as long as you can.

Last of all, report all damages to the mayor so repairs can be done quickly, and painless.

There, now that took around 15 minutes to write . hope it helps some of the newer/beginners out a bit. If it didnt, well then... Teach the new players.

EDIT: can someone delete the other one of these? i noticed theres 2 of them

Re:Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/27 17:10 pretty good, like you somewhat mentioned earlier as you play more and play the same people more you will learn their styles of attacking and be able to act appropriately for each one.

Re:Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/27 19:51 Good post. Altho I am not that happy about killing off attackers all the time. In a normal city vs city it will most likely be 1 attacker vs mayor or two attackers vs mayor and a defender. Which means your own attackers will be 2 on 2 or 3 vs 3 as well. Killing enemy attackers will most likely make their job harder so if possible in an even fight it might be wise to keep your enemy alive around your own base and let your attackers have a chance of inflicting some mayor damage on the enemy's base.

Of course when they report damage on bombs or zooks run to help them. Most of the time you dont even need bombs as the attack squad has already got a breach but make sure to shoo all rebuilding and help take out essential turrets for your attackers to finish the job.

I was thinking about putting that in, but then again, it changes from time to time depending on the situation. so i just put in general info for basics, and a little bit of more advanced stuff. not much though.

Re:Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/28 09:53 I do NOT agree that the defender should not have a med, especially if this defender is the mayor. The most critical tactic in BC is rebuilding and when the mayor is dead, this is not possible. I always keep a med handy, no matter how many meds my attackers need. This is one of the many reasons my cities stay up so long, even after multiple attacks and double teams.

Re:Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/28 09:57 Also, one of the most important tactics of mayoring/defending is rebuilding via checking your map (key m). If you have memorized your design well, check the map with (m) and make sure your design is not missing any buildings. If not, your most important task is not to defend attackers, but to rebuild.

Re:Defensive Strategies - 2007/08/28 17:28 im trying to go for defense here, not mayoring. Mayoring takes a bit more than just defending i.e. blowing up buildings when necessary. and a couple of tricks that i have, hehe.. but this is for defense, not mayoring. I'd make a mayoring thread but im trying to get in a few last minute things before school starts for me so there wont be much time to make one.
