Tips/Strategies/Answers - 2007/08/18 00:38
Here are some strategies, tips, and recommendations based off of my playing experience, questions that people ask about attacking, and my observations of others during gameplay. A lot of these are simple and sometimes obvious, but very often overlooked. A lot of players will improve if they read this and try to implement it into their playing.
Attacking: When approaching an enemy city, make sure that you ALREADY have your screen tabbed over so that you can see maximum range in the direction you are heading. This allows you to see defense, avoid damage and shoot any outer turrets immediately upon entering hostile ground.
If no defender is near: You should be able to destroy one turret and have a bomb layed before the defender even gets to you most of the time. You must keep a constant watch on the radar to know where the enemy is. To save valuable time, drive past external turrets and lay a bomb next to a building BEFORE you start shooting the turrets. By the time you are done shooting the turret, the building will be destroyed. This is much better than shooting a turret and laying a bomb afterwards, because this allows the defender to reach you before the bomb explodes.
If a defender is near: If you are immediately greeted by a defender, your main objective is to lower his health so that he has to get a medkit/use a hospital., or dfg him. While dogfighting, you need to get in a few shots on whatever turrets are around, and use the turret fire against the enemy.
Choosing the right spot to attack: It doesn’t matter how good of an attacker you are if you do not attack the right spots. Know which factories need to be blown, and which do not. Some cities can be orbed without blowing up any defensive factories, while some can be orbed only if you blow up a certain one. If your team is in imminent danger, bomb/orb factories should be your target to allow your team recovery time. Otherwise, there is no point in blowing bombs/orb because it will just make the other team 4D. All items effect each other somehow. Destroying any one factory sets up a potential chain reaction and it is up to you to attack the right factories at the right time to finish the chain.
For instance, Kaboom often says that he blew the walkie factory. 1. No one cares if you blew walkies. 2. He probably didn’t need to blow the factory, and is attacking the wrong spot. 3. Get back to me when you destroy some turrets.
Pay attention to where enemy turrets are deployed so that once a factory is destroyed, you know what areas will be defenseless. For instance, in Chris’s huambo, if the sleepers are blown, one should immediately attack the west side and take out the factories that were guarded by a sleeper. This is possible in every city; the problem is that people usually don’t pay attention. Also pay attention to housing, what factories they supply and how they are being rebuilt. Often times, a mayor will rebuild in a poor location allowing you to blow up a house and shoot the factory that it supplied, you just have to be aware of it. Always look at housing population levels.
When your team has destroyed some defensive factories and is moving in for the orb, the WORST thing that you can do is die immediately on your next attack. Panic and impatience will ruin your progress and allow the enemy to rebuild very easily. It is better to be cautious, stay alive, and prevent rebuilding than to die, doing no further damage. Always remember, they will use mines and dfgs once their turrets are gone, likely putting them at entrances and on the CC.
Communication is crucial. When you respawn, you should always let people at your base know what has been destroyed. The mayor should always have a walkie to relay this message to people on their way to attack. If I am halfway to Chris’s huambo, and I know that sleepers are destroyed, I am guaranteed to do a lot of damage, so long as my team has communicated effectively, and I understand what to attack next.
A common mistake is thinking that should attack the same spot where you blew a factory on the previous attack. For example, say you blew a green factory on the east side of the city, a lot of people think they should keep attacking that spot afterwards. To the contrary, as soon as the new greens are spawned, they will most likely be dropped on the east side. In reality, you should go attack the part of the city that is no longer defended by any green turrets.
Staying alive is important. In a 2 v 1, or any other situation, don’t try to be a hero. Remember that if the only defender is busy with you, then your teammate is free to do damage. If the defender goes to him, it leaves you free. You need to back off and be aggressive at the right times.
Use a defender’s turrets against them. One of the quickest and easiest ways to kill a defender is to pay attention to their turret placement, and at the right time, draw its fire. If done right, it’s nearly impossible for one to survive getting shot by their own plasma!
Suicide attacking can be a very effective tool, IF USED PROPERLY. Most often, people do it the wrong way, and end up wasting items. If you are sure that you can take out your defender, while dropping bombs on an important factory, then it is worth doing.
When you have someone actively defending you, it is usually pointless to lay a bomb. This is where suicide bombing is very effective. If necessary, drop a few bombs and sit on top of them. Absorb all the shots that you can with your tank, allowing the bombs time to explode.
Be open to different ways of attacking a specific city. Some cities require that you spread out, while others will require that you attack the same spot together. Formulate a strategy and make sure the whole team understands it.
Here is a situation where a lot of wasted opportunities arise: When your teammate tells you that the enemy’s bombs, or key offensive items have been destroyed, DO NOT WASTE TIME, you must all attack immediately. This includes having your mayor attack, even if he has no bombs. I prefer that my mayor attack with no bombs. Mayors assisting with turret shooting is good enough, and often results in victory. When you have a mayor using offensive items along with the three commandos, items will be in very short supply, usually making you wait for bomb production, in turn allowing the enemy to rebuild. Mayors do not need to attack with a medkit (unless they are highly skilled attackers), because you are usually taking the orber’s 2nd medkit.
Your mind is one of the most important weapons in BC. You must be able to strategize, foresee what your enemy is doing, and outsmart them. If someone has found a weak spot in your city, and keeps attacking it, try changing the building layout or reinforcing the spot with more turrets. There is no excuse for letting someone blow up factories in the spot that they have attacked multiple times. You knew they were going to attack there and you should have changed the defense to prevent it. If someone keeps taking the same path/approach to your city, lay more mines in that area. There is obviously a reason why they keep going to the same spot, they see something they like. You need to figure out what that is and change it. If someone persistently attacks the west side, the turrets on the east side are useless, move one or two to support the side under attack. Your goal is just to hold off the attacker long enough for your city to orb his. FORCING him to attack different spots and different turret layouts is a great strategy.
4D does not pay. 95% of the time, the team who chooses to defend 4 people, especially when not necessary, will lose. If one person attacks, they have the best opportunity anyone can ask for… a 1v1 against the mayor. All it takes is one good attack and you can orb them. Why do people 4D? Many reasons. Some people think its funny, but these people are basically admitting defeat and have no desire to improve. One of the best ways to improve your skills is to break out of a 4D situation and go attack solo. You will never get better if you play it safe every time.
